Another film by actor/director Sergio Rubini, starring Riccardo Scamarcio, Vittoria Puccini and himself, came to theatres March 20, in this new thriller set in Rome. Scamarcio’s character Adrian is a young sculptor, hoping to break out in the art world. At a gallery exposition showing his work, Adrian spies Gloria, played by Puccini, contemplating his sculptural piece on display. She is a young art critic looking for the next big artist. They begin an intense affair despite the fact that Gloria is also in a relationship with Lulli, another older art critic, portrayed by Rubini. Gloria leaves Lulli for Adrian, even after Lulli tells her he is impotent and asks to marry her. Then one day Adrian runs into Lulli, just as he’s about to meet Gloria, and Lulli offers to help out his career. Lulli has a blond femme fatale, Sonia, with him and appears to have gotten over Gloria. The happy couple rent a house together in Rome and Adrian continues his work. Lulli helps get Adrian into a big show in Berlin and Adrian believes he is on the rise. Gloria finds out she’s pregnant but they don’t tell anyone. However Adrian lets it slip when Lulli and Sonia, who is actually his assistant, come over for drinks and dinner. Adrian’s career stalls and he begins to question Lulli, especially since he needs the money. Gloria is upset with Adrian over his career and the baby and she goes to Lulli for advice. She begins to see cracks in her relationship between the two men, when one day she notices her landlady being paid by Sonia, through a café window. She, too, begins to question Lulli’s involvement in her and Adrian’s lives. Another strain on Gloria and Adrian’s relationship occurs when she loses the baby and Adrian leaves a show to rush to her side. Other stresses continue to happen: Gloria leaves for a little while, Adrian still isn’t being paid for his work and Lulli is still interfering. It is revealed towards the end that Lulli knew of Adrian and Gloria’s affair the entire time and schemed to ruin their relationship. He and Adrian argue and try to hurt each other. Lulli also gives him a gun that he has in a display as a joke. Near the end, Gloria reads a letter from Lulli, on her way to meet with Adrian, to talk things over with Adrian. As Adrian approaches her, he has Gloria’s necklace he made for her in one pocket and the gun in his other pocket…The film was very well directed by Rubini, who used interesting camera shots to depict the emotions of the characters and to create suspense. The actors gave great performances with intensity to their roles, adding to each scene the drama and suspense of the story. The film was stylishly portrayed with its costumes, settings, young, sexy actors and photography. This film is reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock films, and even of Woody Allen’s “Matchpoint”, as an attempt by Sergio Rubini to bring back film noir to Italian cinema. There’s a complacency of the two lovers that begins to shatter the lives of the protagonists. The femme fatale adds some tension but surprisingly is not used to its full extent like they’re usually portrayed. There were many plot twists and the film ended like most film noir films. It would be in the best interest for Italian cinema to follow Rubini’s lead and continue to create more film noir to offer a variety of plots and suspense to its repertoire.

Il Thriller è ambientato a Roma e parla di un giovane scultore Adrian, Riccardo Scamarcio, aspirante artista emergente dell’arte contemporanea. Adrian incontra Gloria, Vittoria Puccini, una giovane critica d’arte, ad una mostra e nasce la passione tra i due nonostante Gloria sia fidanzata da oltre dieci anni con il critico d’arte Lulli, Sergio Rubini, più grande di lei. Gloria decide di lasciare Lulli sebbene quest’ultimo le chieda di sposarlo. Ma le strade dei tre protagonisti si riuniscono ben presto, Lulli offrirà il suo ‘aiuto’ ad Adrian per sfondare nel mondo dell’arte. Aiuto che nasconde tanti perché e tante motivazioni…Il film è stato diretto magistralmente dal maestro Rubini, che utilizza una tecnica di inquadratura dei personaggi atta a creare la giusta suspense. Gli attori dal canto loro sono riusciti a calarsi in modo intenso nei loro ruoli. Il noir di Rubini ci rimanda ai film di Alfred Hitchcock e al più recente Woody Allen in Matchpoint, ci auguriamo che in seguito il cinema italiano possa concentrarsi ancora di più sulla realizzazione di noir di questo calibro.
