The Alternative Atmosphere
Florence is a maze of architectural buildings, winding roads and swirling colors’ that give the city a vibrant backdrop. Upon spending time within the suburbs it is clear to see that the atmosphere is one of a creative contrast to what you may find in the city centre. In nearly every side street you will find walls scattered with graffiti in a blur of artistic independence. Like many European Cities, Florence has had to learn to socially adapt to poverty. Many foreign tourists may be stopped and kindly asked for money, and although some gypsy travelers may be more demanding than expected - it is still eye opening to see the way of life they have; which in turn makes us grateful for our own.
Education
The University of Florence is also tucked away from the centre, and it is here that you can see how the students express their freedom of speech in a totally different way to how we as UK students do! The University entrance is covered in their opinions and thoughts against society. It is clear that they want to make a difference today so that they can have a brighter tomorrow.
Fashion Forward
Fashion plays a huge part within Florence’s cultural existence. Many shop windows possess extravagant backdrops which are technical works of art. Colors, patterns and expensively dressed mannequins are the main focus of calling you into the store and eventually causing you to part ways with your Euro’s! World renown brands such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton also light up the streets with their stunning visual displays of fashion – and expensive price tags!
From our first few days in the city it is clear that Florence has LOTS to offer, more than meets the eye in fact!
It is vital to explore and take in every essence of the city’s wonderful culture – and most importantly remember to wear some sensible walking shoes!
